Mana Tangata - Learning about the importance of human rights, integrity, pride, character, and leadership qualities

What are we learning...

Term 1 - Stories of Hawaiki - “Why did Tamatekapua leave Hawaiki?”

Our taonga have been learning the stories related to our ancestors of the Te Arawa canoe in the time of Hawaiki, such as the story of Tamatekapua and the death of his brother Whakatūria, the farewell of their father Houmaitawhiti, and the story of Ngātoroirangi and fire.

Term 2 - The Great Migration - “Where did the ancestors of the Te Arawa canoe settle?”

In term two we learnt about our ancestors who arrived on the Te Arawa canoe and where they settled. This includes our stories about our six main Koromatua of Whakaue, the six primary chiefly ancestors of Ngāti Whakaue, our school’s tribal affiliation.

Term 3 - Īhenga’s Discoveries - “What are some of the key lessons from Īhenga?”

This term three we will be learning about the adventures and discoveries of Īhenga, grandson of Tamatekapua, and how he is attributed with the naming of many places due to his diligence and effort while searching the land of Aotearoa.
