School Lunches

The Prime Minister recently announced that the Government will be trialling a free healthy and nutritious daily school lunch in some schools for all Year 1 to 8 students.  We are really excited to let you know that our school will be joining the free lunch trial from Term 1, 2020.

We know that all of you try to provide your children with a good lunch every day. But, as you all know, many in our community are struggling, despite their best efforts. Offering a free lunch for all our children who need it will go some way to assisting many of our families. This is why we have joined the trial.      We would like as many children as are eligible to join the trial. But participation is not compulsory

The lunches will cater for the dietary, health and cultural needs of all our students. All providers will be required to meet New Zealand food safety standards. Right now, we are working with the Ministry of Education on a programme that best meets the needs of our school community. So far, we have signed a contract with Libelle Group who will provide a hot or cold lunch for every student, every day, every term in 2020.

The trial will start in around 30 schools, including ours, in the Bay of Plenty / Waiariki and Hawkes Bay / Tairāwhiti in Term 1 2020. It will reach around 21,000 students in about 120 schools and kura by the start of 2021.The trial will run for a year, and the results will be looked at before deciding what to do next.   The effects of the free lunch programme on our students’ wellbeing and education will be evaluated. This will provide a solid basis to inform future decisions about continuing or expanding the programme.
