Maths-Whizz is an online virtual maths tutor for kids that caters to your child’s unique ability – helping them reach their true potential and preparing them for success in school. As an alternative to a private tutor, it is designed to simulate the behaviour of a human tutor. It never gets bored or frustrated and never judges your child. It just delivers the ideal lesson to progress your child’s learning ability. That’s why Maths-Whizz is the multi-award-winning, industry leading online maths tutor.

Advancing literacy learning with books and films

Rotorua Primary students aged Year 4 and up have the opporunity to access this exciting new learning program within their classrooms

Audio Visual Achievement in Literacy, Language and Learning, or AVAILLL for short, has been successfully used in schools in New Zealand since 2008 and is now being taught in Australia. AVAILLL aims to increase a student’s abilities in comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, spelling and attitudes toward reading and does so in a way that is novel and exciting.

Independent research has shown significant increases in literacy skills and student engagement when using AVAILLL compared to students who only watched subtitled movies for an equal amount of time.

It has also shown the need for literacy education to include multimedia to make the learning relevant and engaging as well as for teaching to be explicit and contextually based so that the learning becomes embedded.

Created by Dr Alice Killackey in 2008, it has since been further developed and enhanced by literacy expert Chuck Marriott.

The programme successfully reaches a wide range of students with various reading levels due to the powerful visual and audio support experienced by students as they read and watch movies during the program. Students then learn to use their own imagery and apply these skills to various types of text. The programme can be easily implemented by classroom teachers.

“The positive attitudes to reading it has engendered and the growing confidence in the kids, has already made it very worthwhile for me and my classes.”Teacher, Papanui High School
